The Sabah Society was recently invited to Jesselton University College (JUC) to deliver a talk on sustainability and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The session formed part of JUC’s efforts to prepare students to become responsible global citizens while underscoring The Sabah Society’s ongoing commitment to education and community engagement.
Connecting Global Goals with Local Action
The talk was delivered by Dr. Elaine Kong, one of the past presidents and also an active member of The Sabah Society, who shared her insights on the many dimensions of sustainability. Her presentation touched on pressing issues such as environmental conservation, wildlife protection, and community well-being, while linking them to the 17 SDGs.
Dr. Elaine highlighted that the SDGs are not abstract global targets but a universal call to action that can be translated into local initiatives here in Sabah. By connecting the goals to the state’s unique environment and culture, she encouraged students to reflect on how they can contribute as individuals and future professionals.
Engaging Over 100 Young Minds
The session brought together around 100 students, filling the lecture hall with energy and curiosity. The interactive format created space for questions, dialogue, and fresh ideas, as students explored how their studies and future careers could align with sustainability. Many were inspired to take a more active role in local initiatives, and several expressed interest in collaborating with The Sabah Society on upcoming projects.

Building Partnerships for Impact
At The Sabah Society, we believe that partnerships with educational institutions are key to fostering a deeper understanding of Sabah’s heritage, culture, and environment. By engaging with universities such as JUC, we can empower the next generation to not only learn about sustainability but to actively shape solutions for a more resilient and inclusive future.
Looking Ahead
The Sabah Society is grateful to Jesselton University College for hosting this event and for sharing our vision of a sustainable Sabah. We look forward to further collaborations with JUC and other institutions, continuing our mission to know Sabah while supporting global goals for people and the planet.
