TSS Field Trip: Rainforest Discovery Centre Educational trip, Sandakan | Fri, 19 July 2019
July 19
The ‘masting’ of dipterocarps is a comparatively rare phenomenon in tropical rainforests, known most spectacularly in Southeast Asia. The last masting event in Sabah happened in 2014-2015 and we are fortunate to yet again witness another masting — this time an even more significant event than the last one. The Sabah Society is pleased to announce a special educational trip to the well-known Rainforest Discovery Centre at Sepilok, where we will see and be introduced to the mass fruiting of dipterocarps and fruit trees along the canopy walkway, rising to 25 m above ground level.
Date: Friday, 19 July 2019.
Time: 10.30 am.
Meeting place: Rainforest Discovery Centre front entrance, Sepilok.
We are privileged to have Dr Wong Siew Te, Dr Joan Pereira, Dr. Robert Ong, Ms. Eyen Khoo and Postar Miun to give us a guided tour of this wonderful forest.
This will be followed by a talk entitled ‘Mast fruiting in Borneo: The Wildlife perspective’ by Dr. Wong Siew Te at Blessing Garden in IJM, Sandakan at 7.30 pm
