The real reason for species extinctions: Human Cognitive Bias and Risk Aversion | Datuk Dr John Payne

I will start with a 45-minute documentary, filmed from 2013-2015, and released in 2016, that outlines the story of the final years of the Hairy rhinoceros (usually known as the Sumatran rhinoceros) from the Sabah perspective. I will then take 15 minutes to outline why this species went extinct over a 5,000 year time frame, starting from its former stronghold in southern China, and now leaving Sumatra as the only place where a few fertile female rhinos of this species remain. The clear message is that human cognitive biases, risk aversion and other human psychological and emotional syndromes (and not habitat loss or poaching) led to the extinction of this species throughout its range, and why it will go extinct in the lifetime of younger listeners. I will briefly add a few additional lessons learned, that can help to prevent the extinction of other Malaysian wildlife species.
