The Kinabatangan floodplain is the largest and most important freshwater wetland in Sabah and it is one of the last remaining habitats in the State for iconic wildlife populations such as the Borneo form of the Asian elephant (popularly known as the Borneo Pygmy elephant), Bornean orang-utan, and Proboscis monkeys.
This floodplain harbours over 250 species of birds, 90 species of mammals, 90 freshwater fish species (the richest freshwater fishery in Sabah), 20 species of reptiles and at least 15 amphibian species (WWF, 2015).
With over 20 tourism operators varying from 5-star accommodation to homestay facilities, how do the tourism operators plan to strike balance between conservation and protection of the fragile area with tourism activities? Is there a way forward?
