SUMMARY:TSS KK Virtual talk: The future of Lahad Datu by DSP Yong Teck Lee
DESCRIPTION:The Sabah Society will host an optimistic theme talk on “The Future of Lahad Datu” by former Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Yong Teck Lee on Wednesday 31st March\, 2021 at 8 p.m. at Damai Plaza premises which will also be on Zoom / Facebook online.\nOur speaker\, Datuk Seri Panglima Yong Teck Lee’s vision for Lahad Datu include an integrated international airport with a ferry terminal\, a maritime academy\, building towards being 5G-enabled\, a gas-powered plant\, food safety and certification facility\, among others.  \nYong Teck Lee is the current chairman of state-owned POIC Sabah Sdn Bhd\, the the developer of the Lahad Datu based Palm Oil Industrial Cluster (POIC). \nBorn in 1958\, Datuk Yong who spent his young childhood in Lahad Datu is well versed with the history of his home town and is keen to change any negative perception towards Lahad Datu. It is now touted as a safe and attractive investment hub with its comparative advantages to be a major contributor to the Sabah economy. \nLahad Datu is surrounded by stretches of cocoa and oil palm plantations and was a timber exporting port with and small airport for domestic flights. \nA settlement is believed to have existed here in the 15th century\, as excavations have unearthed Ming Dynasty Chinese ceramics. Just east of Lahad Datu is the village of Tunku\, a notorious base for pirates and slave traders in the 19th century. \nOn 23 September 1985\, 15-20 armed foreign bank robbers from the neighbouring Philippines landed on this town\, killing at least 21 people and injuring 11 others. Another intrusion occurred in February 2013 and lasted for over than a month between Malaysian armed forces and the Filipino militants that resulted in the creation of the Eastern Sabah Security Command and Eastern Sabah Security Zone.  \nAfter 15 years of establishment (2005)\, it is now time for POIC to be a focus centre for national and regional investment over the next ten years by leveraging its location along the Lombok-Makassar shipping route\, and centrality within BIMP-EAGA (Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East Asean Growth Area) to become a logistics hub for the region by developing oil palm downstream and other industries and to promote manufacturing to generate outward cargo. \nThis will elevate Sabah as the heart of BIMP-EAGA and enhance development and inter-territorial economic opportunities especially with Indonesia’s planned new national capital in East Kalimantan. \nKindly please contact us 088 – 250 443 / 013 – 880 9850 or email us sabahsoc@gmail.com to book your seat as we have limited seats. As usual\, we will adhere to the MCO SOP which is mask and hand sanitisation. \n\n

DESCRIPTION:Dear all\,\n\nIt has been a while since we all met and hope that all of you have been keeping well. The year 2020 has been a very challenging year in all aspects\, may it be economically\, socially and physically.\n\nTherefore for 2021\, we hope that when the situation gets better\, we would be able to have meetings again and catch up with each other\, until then any talks organized will be conducted online. Well\, the inability to meet physically does not mean that we stop learning more about Sabah. \n\nTherefore for the month of January\, the Sabah Society (KK & SDK) will be holding an online talk on “Early History of Sandakan Bay & German Town”. Am sure the phrase “German town” would have raised a lot of question marks and wonder how it relates to Sandakan Bay? Well\, do come and join us as our speaker Rosalie Corpuz (a.k.a Lala) will tell us more. Personally\, I have known Lala for quite a number of years and I must say every single conversation I had with her\, I am guaranteed to leave with deeper insights to either the culture or history of Sabah. She is a speaker who is very passionate on all the subjects she works on and not to forget witty as well. Therefore\, I am very sure the talk would be a night where all of us will learn something more about Sandakan.\n\nDetails are as follows:\nDate: 14th January 2021 (Thursday)\nTime: 8 p.m.\nVenue: Zoom (Meeting ID: 841 9330 8804/ Passcode: 885083)\n\nSee you there and also Happy New Year to all of you!\n\nEyen\nTSS Sandakan Chairlady \n\nP/S Dearest members\, kindly please remember to renew your membership for KK and Sandakan areas ~ President\, Datuk Dr Heng Aik Cheng.

SUMMARY:TSS KK FB live talk | Sister ships : Three 12th century shipwrecks in Southeast Asia | 8 to 9 PM | Thur 17 Dec 2020
DESCRIPTION:In 1998 the Ceramic Society of Indonesia published a book entitled “The Pulau Buaya Wreck: Finds from the Song Period”. The cargo was salvaged in 1989 and consisted primarily of ceramics from Guangdong and Fujian\, with a smattering of finer wares from other provinces. Unfortunately\, there was no archaeological documentation\, so all context has been lost and we know nothing of the origin of the ship.\n\nNearly three decades after the salvage of the Pulau Buaya Wreck\, two new shipwrecks have come to light. Remarkably\, the Lingga Wreck also sank within sight of Pulau Buaya\, with a primary cargo of Guangdong ceramics. Again\, there was no archaeological excavation\, however photographs provide some context\, the hull remains have been identified\, and a date range has been determined. The Flying Fish Wreck sank far away\, near Kota Kinabalu in Sabah. She was archaeologically excavated. Her cargo consisted primarily of Fujian ceramics along with some finer wares from Jingdezhen.\n\nWhile there are a few comparable artefacts linking the two new finds\, the Pulau Buaya Wreck bridges the gap with many parallels. From a comparative analysis it may be reasonably concluded that the Pulau Buaya\, Lingga and Flying Fish Wrecks were all Southeast Asian lashed-lug ships that sank during the first quarter of the 12th century\, towards the end of the Northern Song dynasty (960 to 1127 CE). They were all transporting Chinese ceramics and ironware to Southeast Asian markets. They were sister ships.\n\nAbout Dr. Michael Flecker\n\nMichael started his working life in 1985 as a civil engineer in a Singapore-based company. In 1987 he joined Pacific Sea Resources for the two-year excavation of a Manila Galleon\, Nuestra Senora de la Concepcion\, in Saipan. Since then\, he has directed some of the most important shipwreck excavations in Asia\, including the 9th century Belitung Wreck; the 10th century Intan Wreck\, the 13th century Java Sea Wreck; the 15th century Bakau Wreck; the 1608 Binh Thuan Wreck\, and the 1690 Vung Tau Wreck.\n\nMichael’s specialty is ancient Asian ship construction and trade. He earned his PhD from the National University of Singapore\, based on his excavation of the Intan Wreck. This thesis was published as a book by the British Archaeological Report Series (2002). Other works include the book\, Porcelain from the Vung Tau Wreck (2001)\, chapters in Southeast Asian Ceramics: New Light on Old Pottery (2009)\, Shipwrecked: Tang Treasures and Monsoon Winds (2010) and numerous other books\, along with many articles in international journals. He is currently serving as a Research Fellow at the Singapore ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute.\n\nContact us at email: sabahsoc@gmail.com |  Whatsapp: 013 – 880 9850  |  Landline: 088 – 250 443\n\n

SUMMARY:TSS KK FB live talk: The Agreements of Cessation of North Borneo: Why the Sultans had to relinquish their claims of ownership of North Borneo in 1877 & 1878
DESCRIPTION:In December 1877 the Sultan of Brunei relinquished his claims of ownership of North Borneo to an Austrian diplomat named Baron Von Overbeck and an English businessman named Alfred Dent. Barely a month later\, in January 1878\, the Sultan of Sulu also relinquishes his claims of ownership of North Borneo Sabah to Dent and Overbeck. The confusion over the contents of the agreements and use of one specific word contained in the agreements of “cessation” of North Borneo signed 142 years ago has in turn led to a great misunderstanding over claims of “lease” by the heirs of one Sultanate. In order to understand the context of the agreements signed\, there is a need to understand the reasons why both Sultanates decided cessation was the only way to save their individual kingdoms from total collapse in 1877 and 1878. With access to the original documents of cessation signed in 1877 and 1878 in the London Archives\, Avtar Singh will share his observations and provide a clear explanation why there exists such confusion and misconceptions relating to ownership over North Borneo. \nAvtar Singh Sandhu\, 17/9/1972\nBorn: Queen Elizabeth Hospital\nStatus: semi-retired/Private researcher & writer\n\nCurrent Work: Private Researcher & historian on World War Two specifically Battle of Midway\, Indian Legion 950 & Battle of Kursk (Northern Front).\n\nBooks Published:\n\n-My Enemy is my Enemy: The Indian Legion & The Waffen-SS (2017)\n\n-Tiger Legion 950 (Indische) (to be released 15th December 2020)\n\n-Beast of the East: Ferdinand Tank Destroyer at the Battle of Kursk (to be released January 2021)\n\n-The Battle of Midway: A 3 volume series (to be released February 2021)\n\nEducation:\n\n-Primary Education: St Anne’s\, Labuan\n\n-Secondary Education: United World College of South East Asia\, Singapore\n1984-1989\n\nPre-University: Canning College\, Perth\n\nOxford University Certificate: World War One Perspectives\n\nArea of Job Training:\n\nOutdoor Leadership & Outdoor First Responder\n\nOutdoor Leadership Training:\n\n-Swift Water Rescuer Level 2-1995\n-Bronze Medallion Life Saving 1989\n-Wilderness Outdoor First Responder-1995\n-Open Water Diver-1989\n-Stress & Rescue Diver (SSI)-2002-present\n\nPioneer of the Sport of Ultra Trail Marathon Endurance Races in Malaysia 2010.\n\nRace Director & Founder of:\n\n-TMBT Ultra Trail Marathon 2011-2017\n-BUTM Ultra Trail Marathon 2014-2017\n-Beaufort 60k Ultra Marathon 2012-present\n-Labuan Ultra Marathon 2019-present\n-Borneo 250k Death March Ultra Marathon 2012-present\n\nRace Director of:\n\n-Sabah Adventure Challenge 2004-2016\n\n-Writer of code of ethics & safety standards for adventure racing in Malaysia 2004\n\n-Writer of the code of ethics & safety standards of ultra trail running in Malaysia 2010\n\n-Co-writer of Ethics & Safety Standards for Sabah Trail Running Associations\n\nManaging Director:\n\nSabah Adventure Challenge 2004-2016\n\nAvta Sports Sdn Bhd\n2018-present

SUMMARY:TSS KK Talk - Tues\, 11 Aug 2020 | The 1963 Malaysia Agreement: Pakatan's failed restoration & Perikatan's fledging initiatives
DESCRIPTION:Over the past decades\, people of the Borneo States (Sabah and Sarawak) have felt that their rights under MA63 have been violated\, and a sense of distrust toward the federal-state relationship in a Peninsula-dominated Malaysia. The call for the federal government to fulfill its MA63 obligations surfaces during every election\, but in recent years MA63 has increasingly resonated in the political arena. The 14th general elections\, May 2018\, saw Sabah and Sarawak secure campaign promises for increased political autonomy over religious matters\, education\, health\, and fiscal control over their development agendas. Expectations of progress ran high\, given the unprecedented change of federal government. The frustrations run deep; some East Malaysians have called for Sabah and Sarawak to secede from Malaysia if their demands are not met. These issues resonate again\, in the aftermath of Pakatan Harapan’s collapse.\n\nThis talk discusses the MA63 issues\, the unfulfilled promises by the signatories of MA63\, and federal state relationship with regards to revenue. Dr Johan unpack the attempts by the Pakatan government to resolve the major issues concerning MA63 and Perikatan government fledging initiatives to follow on Pakatan’s unfulfilled promises.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr Johan Ariffin was formerly the CEO of Institute for Development Studies\, a Sabah government think tank. He holds a Doctorate in Business Administration from the University of South Australia and an MBA from the University of Hull. He has worked with several multinational corporations\, including ExxonMobil\, and held board positions of several leading companies including Shell Timor and Petronas subsidiary companies. Dr Johan has also served as Deputy Director of the Sabah State Foundation in charge of education development\, while concurrently spearheading oil and gas development for the state. He is a member of G25\, and a regular columnist contributing opinion articles to online news portals and the Daily Express\, Kota Kinabalu.\n\nKindly please take note that we are still under RMCO. Therefore all SOP’s set by the Government will be in place ie recording of temperature\, use of face mask and social distancing of 1M apart.\n\nAs such\, we are opening the Secretariat for only max 15 paxs – kindly please register at email: sabahsoc@gmail.com or whatsapp: 013 – 880 9850\n\nFor those who would like to view online\, we shall provide the zoom link at a later date.\n\n

SUMMARY:Joint event by The Sabah Society KK & Sandakan and Forever Sabah Institute | Thur\, 30 July 2020
DESCRIPTION:Ada Blanche Locke spent 16 years in North Borneo as consort of Victorian explorer and naturalist\, William Burgess Pryer\, the founder of Sandakan\, and first white resident of the East Coast. Her vivid and eloquent recollection of daily life in the formative years of British North Borneo are brought to life in this highly-awaited biographical volume by author and aspiring artist\, June Adeline Corpuz. Accentuated with June’s scenic etchings of late-19th century Sandakan and watercolour sketches by William Pretyman\, the West Coast Resident in the late 19th century\, the book captures Mrs Pryer’s momentous years at its most evocative.\n\nJune Adeline Corpuz is the granddaughter of Penghalo Stanilaus Dominic\, an orphan from a royal house of sea-faring tribe\, who was brought up by the Pryers. June migrated to England initially to complete her education\, but ultimately\, as a banking professional for forty years. On retirement\, curiosity about her childhood stories compelled June to research passionately into the heritage of the Pryers that eventually formed the basis for this book and the biography of Mrs Pryer. \n\nPlease email to sabahsoc@gmail.com with your information – Full name\, email\, Country\, City\, Organisation and Job Title and we will provide you the zoom link.\n\nFor our members here in Kota Kinabalu\, Sabah – we are specially opening The Secretariat for only max 20 paxs to join in via Group Zoom. Please do email us to reserve your seat. For others\, you may join in via Zoom online wherever you are. Remember to email us and we will provide the Zoom Link to you.\n\nKindly please take note that we are still under RMCO.
