SUMMARY:The Innovation of A Coastal Reservoir in Sabah
DESCRIPTION:Coastal Reservoir is a technology that develops river water in the sea near a river mouth. It is a paradigm shift in water resources development from storing water in mountainous dams to storing freshwater by the coast.\n\nThe mountainous dams in upstream become “sword of Damocles” to downstream people. CR technology can act as barrier to protect coast from earthquake. CR also can be developed into freshwater agriculture farm\, energy and tourism. CR has potential to transform neglected and polluted coastal area into a sustainable freshwater township.\n\nMalaysia is a tropical Southeast Asian country with a steady annual rainfall and river flow pattern. The enormous river networks provide enough supply to build a coastal reservoir\n\nAccording to this research\, embankment design and reservoir operation must account for climate change implications such as rising groundwater level\, changing streamflow discharge during intense and extended droughts\, floods\, and water quality issues.\n\nFor more information\, please do contact us at 013-880 9850 or email sabahsoc@gmail.com\n\nSpeaker bio data – Datuk Ir. This year the government is celebrating Tun Ismail’s legacy and Sabah Society and SABAR have invited Tawfik to share his views on Inequality in the Borneo states and how to close the gap after 60 years in Malaysia.\n\nMr. Mohamed Tawfik Bin Tun Dr. Ismail bio\n\n“Mr. Mohamed Tawfik Bin Tun Dr. Ismail was formerly a Member of Parliament for Sungai Benut currently Simpang Renggam\, Johor. SUMMARY:The real reason for species extinctions: Human Cognitive Bias and Risk Aversion | Datuk Dr John Payne
DESCRIPTION:I will start with a 45-minute documentary\, filmed from 2013-2015\, and released in 2016\, that outlines the story of the final years of the Hairy rhinoceros (usually known as the Sumatran rhinoceros) from the Sabah perspective. I will then take 15 minutes to outline why this species went extinct over a 5\,000 year time frame\, starting from its former stronghold in southern China\, and now leaving Sumatra as the only place where a few fertile female rhinos of this species remain. The clear message is that human cognitive biases\, risk aversion and other human psychological and emotional syndromes (and not habitat loss or poaching) led to the extinction of this species throughout its range\, and why it will go extinct in the lifetime of younger listeners. I will briefly add a few additional lessons learned\, that can help to prevent the extinction of other Malaysian wildlife species.\n\nTime: 8.00PM\n\nDate: Thursday  |  27 Apr 2023\n\nVenue:  The Sabah Society Secretary\, Damai Plaza\, Luyang.\n\nTel: 013 – 880 9850

SUMMARY:Quizzing in the Asia Pacific | 21 Jan 2022\, Friday | 8.00PM
DESCRIPTION:Hi I’m Nicholas\,\n\nThe Asian Quizzing League has been online since 2020 and we have around 48 teams from all over Asia participating in our league. Basically how it works is that we have teams of 4 players competing against each other from across the region on Zoom\, across all sorts of disciplines such as Art\, History\, Geography\, Sports\, Pop Culture and so forth\n\nBecause most of knowledge and most of quiz around the world is very Euro-centric\, very Anglo-American centric\, we have decided to make the Asian Quizzing Championship.\n\nWe want Asians to be fairly represented in questions as well as in knowledge\, because there is a lot of important knowledge\, a lot of Sabahan and Borneon knowledge out there that deserves to have questions to be set about them.\n\nWhen you set questions about something\, you bring it to the wider audience as a fact that people need to know.\n\nI hope everyone will be able to join the webinar set by Sabah Society about quizzing in the Asia Pacific not merely because we are hoping to recruit more players (and question setters!) but because quizzing and the pursuit of knowledge is a whole lot of fun!\nPlease feel free to drop by\, we will organise an actual demonstration match that will be open to everyone after the talk.\n\nThank you Sabah Society for bringing us in.\n\nJoin zoom meeting: https://zoom.us/j/92973437857?pwd=T1lsWERZTUhmWkovRGtTc2lFajU5UT09\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Infra structures facilities are the heart and soul of a city. A City cannot function without its basic infrastructure such as Road\, Drainage\, Electricity\, Telecommunication\, Water\, Solid Waste disposal and Sewage treatment system.\n\nI was involved in drafting the Draft Kota Kinabalu Structure Plan 2030\, Kota Kinabalu Local Plan 2020 and its Memorandum with DBKK where all the basic infra structure matter were debated\, planned and reported.\n\nThe focus of the talk tonight is about “Parks and Public Spaces” in Kota Kinabalu where in KK\, we do have some great parks and public spaces. Some of the significant parks in KK are Tun Fuad Park at Bukit Padang\, Likas bay\, Ujana Rimba Tropica at Jalan Penampang\, Likas Sports Complex\, Perdana Park at Tanjung Aru\, Sembulan River Park\, and of course last but not least the in famous Prince Philip Park and Tanjung Aru Beach.\n\nSince we are blessed with the year-round wonderful weather\, can we make our Parks and Open Spaces better and link them together ?\n\n2007\, I have the opportunity to work with Minister of Tourism and DBKK to prepared a Term of Reference to solicit infrastructure funding of RM100 Million from the Federal Government to fund a series of Park and Open Spaces Projects. Three projects were identified and two of the projects were partially completed.\n\nSo tonight \, I will share with you on some of the projects I am involved in and hopefully I will be able to continue to contribute my ideas to create more parks and public spaces in KK to make KK becoming one of the most Liveable City in the region if not in the world. There are still many short coming and challenges we have to face\, political issues to overcome\, compromises we have to take and God willing\, I hope we can achieve what we want in our life time for the future generation and their children.\n\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/5029652692\n\nMeeting ID: 502 965 2692\n\n\n\nSpeaker:  Architect Sim Sie Hong\, age 56.\n\nAr.
