SUMMARY:The illegals in Sabah - My untold story | Tan Sri Datuk Chong Kah Kiat\, former CM of Sabah
DESCRIPTION:SEAT RESERVATION CLOSE\n\nSEAT RESERVATION CUT-OFF POINT\n\nDur to overwhelming response\, to everyone who has reserved a seat for Tan Sri Datuk Chong Kah Kiat’s talk\, please take note that TSS will hold the reserved seats onlu until 7.45PM. After this time\, the seats will be opened to walk in guests.\n\nHow did it all begin\, and why has Sabah\, in particular\, faced an influx of PTIs (Pendatang Tanpa Izin) over the years? I have taken steps to address this issue by personally entering the field (turun Padang) to engage directly with the community. Along the way\, I encountered many challenges\, experienced rewards\, and faced some regrets. My story concludes with a reflection on what we\, as Sabahans\, can collectively do to tackle these ongoing issues.\n\nTan Sri Chong Kah Kiat was the 13th Chief Minister of Sabah from March 2001 – March 2003. Tan Sri Chong’s short stint as Chief Minister was pre-occupied with the 3 challenges of his Chief Ministership namely [llegal immigrants\, illegal loggings and illegal fish bombings in Sabah. \n\nTan Sri Chong retired from active politics since 2007 and will be sharing his story of his crusade in addressing the influx of illegal immigrants into Sabah when he was the Chief Minister of Sabah.\n\nIt will be held at The Secretariat The Sabah Society\, Damai Plaza. To secure your seats please contact 013-8809850 or at email sabahsoc@gmail.com

SUMMARY:The diaries of Alexander Rankin Johnstone Dunlop\, 1897 - 1907 | Stella Moo-Tan
DESCRIPTION:Arguably the youngest cadet to serve in the British North Borneo Chartered Company\, AR Dunlop’s life and 46-year career in British North Borneo is extraordinary to say the least. His diaries give us a glimpse of the early part of the British administration where among other things\, he was involved in the pursuit of Mat Salleh who posed the most serious challenge to British rule.\n\nHis diaries are also infused with sketches of many local people and places\, showing Dunlop’s artistic talent.\n\n

SUMMARY:10 talking points from the secret Australian government files on North Borneo & the formation of Malaysia | Avtar Singh | Thur\, 7 Dec 2023 | 8PM
DESCRIPTION:Towards the end of the 1950s\, secret discussions were held within the British government and their allies (Australia & the United States) on the possibilities of some form of a union of Malaya\, Singapore and the Borneo Territories.\n\nColonial Officers privately suggested a union of the Borneo Territories only. However\, the negotiations of any union were complicated\, fraught with distrust\, and a complete misunderstanding of the people of Borneo\, their cultures and how they lived their lives.\n\nBy 1961\, due to external pressures from the United Nations and the spread of communism within South East Asia\, the British Government had no choice but to force a union which the people of North Borneo clearly did not want.\n\nBut what made the representatives of the people of North Borneo (and Sarawak) change their minds and what central role did the United Nations play in forcing this union?\n\nAvtar Singh has been researching secret Australian diplomatic documents and files since January 2023 and has completed the reading of over 9\,000 pages of documents over the past 9 months and has selected 10 key talking points not previously known or acknowledged as being central to the reasons why North Borneo had no choice but to participate in the union that led to the formation of Malaysia.\n\nHis research also coincides with a book he is currently writing titled “The Thomas Jayasuria Interviews” which will be published in late 2024.

SUMMARY:Carbon Trading: An Idea Whose Time Has Come
DESCRIPTION:Carbon Trading- An Idea Whose Time Has Come\n\nThe state government of Sabah has taken sustainable development to the whole new level. Nature Conservation Agreement (NCA) between the State of Sabah and Hoch Standard PTE LTD that was signed on 28 October 2021 aim to selling forest carbon storage and sequestration and its other ecological services to companies interested in buying credits to offset their CO2 emissions. It would include more than two million ha of forest\, supposedly to restore it from mining\, logging and industrial agriculture for the next 100 years or so. Against this background\, this paper discussed the essence of carbon trading. Drawing examples from carbon deals around the world\, we examined the prevailing conventional wisdom or the forgone conclusion that keeping trees standing is better than cutting them down. What are the advantages and disadvantages of trading forest carbon storage and sequestration? Who would gain and who would lose?\n\nSpeaker – Dr. James Alin\nMember of the Faculty of Business\, Economics and Accountancy\, Universiti Malaysia Sabah since 2003. Publications related mostly to economics of conserving wildlife and natural areas. Holder of external positions; as Senior Research Fellow\, Centre for Local Government\, University New England-Business School\, Australia; Senior Research Fellow and Adjunct Professor\, Center for Strategic Policy and Governance\, Palawan State University\, Philippines and Adjunct Professor at the Faculty of Economics and Business\, Universitas Deponegoro\, Republic Indonesia. He co-authored with Mr. Alex Yee (2022) A Tale of 30 Thousand Turtles. Also occasionally writes for local newspapers and internet news portals.

SUMMARY:The Innovation of A Coastal Reservoir in Sabah
DESCRIPTION:Coastal Reservoir is a technology that develops river water in the sea near a river mouth. It is a paradigm shift in water resources development from storing water in mountainous dams to storing freshwater by the coast.\n\nThe mountainous dams in upstream become “sword of Damocles” to downstream people. CR technology can act as barrier to protect coast from earthquake. CR also can be developed into freshwater agriculture farm\, energy and tourism. CR has potential to transform neglected and polluted coastal area into a sustainable freshwater township.\n\nMalaysia is a tropical Southeast Asian country with a steady annual rainfall and river flow pattern. The enormous river networks provide enough supply to build a coastal reservoir\n\nAccording to this research\, embankment design and reservoir operation must account for climate change implications such as rising groundwater level\, changing streamflow discharge during intense and extended droughts\, floods\, and water quality issues.\n\nFor more information\, please do contact us at 013-880 9850 or email sabahsoc@gmail.com\n\nSpeaker bio data – Datuk Ir. SUMMARY:The real reason for species extinctions: Human Cognitive Bias and Risk Aversion | Datuk Dr John Payne
DESCRIPTION:I will start with a 45-minute documentary\, filmed from 2013-2015\, and released in 2016\, that outlines the story of the final years of the Hairy rhinoceros (usually known as the Sumatran rhinoceros) from the Sabah perspective. I will then take 15 minutes to outline why this species went extinct over a 5\,000 year time frame\, starting from its former stronghold in southern China\, and now leaving Sumatra as the only place where a few fertile female rhinos of this species remain. The clear message is that human cognitive biases\, risk aversion and other human psychological and emotional syndromes (and not habitat loss or poaching) led to the extinction of this species throughout its range\, and why it will go extinct in the lifetime of younger listeners. I will briefly add a few additional lessons learned\, that can help to prevent the extinction of other Malaysian wildlife species.\n\nTime: 8.00PM\n\nDate: Thursday  |  27 Apr 2023\n\nVenue:  The Sabah Society Secretary\, Damai Plaza\, Luyang.\n\nTel: 013 – 880 9850
