SUMMARY:TSS KK Talk: Fri\, 27 Sept 2019 | Wild Fruits of Sabah | Datuk Anthony Lamb
DESCRIPTION:The edible wild fruits\, nuts and seeds of Borneo that are found in the different forests from coastal seashores and islands\, through the lowlands and hills\, to the montane forests\, and on different soils\, are estimated to be in the region of 500 different species. These were consumed by the many groups of people inhabiting the island\, over many decades. They were the ones who had initially discovered whether different fruits\, nuts and seeds were edible\, and that some otherwise toxic species become edible only after cooking or fermentation processes. Botanists and taxonomists have subsequently provided the scientific names for these plants and classified most of them into their respective families and genera. However\, there are still new species being discovered in what are some of the most species-rich forests in the world\, and for many genera\, Borneo is their centre of diversity. Many species are rare and little known\, and over 30% of plant species are endemic to Borneo.\n\nDate: Friday\, 27 Sept 2019\n\nTime: 8.00 pm\n\nVenue: The Secretariat\, Damai Plaza\n\nSpeaker : Datuk Anthony Lamb\n\nAnthony Lamb was born in Sri Lanka\, where he had his early schooling and found his interest in the diversity of wildlife. He completed his secondary education in England and graduated in Agriculture from Cambridge University\, followed by a Diploma in Tropical Agriculture at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad\, before joining the Department of Agriculture in Sabah in 1962. From 1967 to 1977 he was in charge of the Ulu Dusun Agricultural Research Station\, where he started taking an interest in the great diversity of wild edible fruits in the forests there\, aided by botanists in the Forest Research Centre at Sepilok.\n\nIn 1987\, he married Anthea Phillipps\, at the time ecologist with the Sabah Parks\, and with her and Dr George Argent and Sheila Collenette jointly produced a book on the Rhododendrons of Sabah\, followed by Pitcher Plants of Borneo with Anthea Phillipps and Chien Lee. More recently\, he has been involved in a 2-volume edition of the Orchids of Mount Kinabalu\, A Guide to the Gingers of Borneo\, a co-author in a monograph of Bulbophyllum of Borneo with Jaap Vermeulen and Peter O’Byrne\, and in 2016\, A Guide to Hoyas of Borneo with Michele Rodda.\n\nHe officially retired from the Department of Agriculture in 1992\, but then took on the task of developing the Agricultural Park in Tenom until 2001 when it was opened. Since retirement he has worked in voluntary roles with the Forest Research Centre Sabah and its Herbarium.  He has now retired in Kota Kinabalu with his wife and has a daughter and son.

DESCRIPTION:The writer\, Bianca Gerlich of  “Thus Has Marudu Ceased to Exist: The Rise and Fall of a North Bornean Kerajaan” will be giving a talk on the history of Syarif Osman. Who was Syarif Osman? Was he the Pirate of Borneo or a hero?\n\nTSS KK Talk: The Fall of Marudu: History of Syarif Osman\n\nDate: 18 July 2019\nTime: 8pm\nVenue: The Secretariat\, Sabah Society\nSpeakers: Dr. Bianca Gerlich\n\n\name a typical Malay thalassocracy that included neighboring river systems and even more distant communities. Syarif Osman was friends with the powerful people in the area. He had married into the sultan’s family of Sulu. The Spaniards in the Philippines and the governor of Singapore recognized his position as Raja of Marudu. In addition\, Syarif Osman controlled the very lucrative trade in the region. He had grown into a serious competitor for White Raja of Sarawak and also become a dangerous liability for him: all his political opponents were allies of Syarif Osman.\n \nIn August 1845 Marudu was destroyed by the British. Syarif Osman – the leader of the people of Marudu – was accused of piracy. Marudu itself was labeled a pirate’s nest. This narrative was reproduced by historians well into the 21st century. Today we know that none of this was true\, and that the letters and reports by the British officers involved in the battle of Marudu contained untrue statements.\n\n\nThe origin of this defamation can be traced back to a single man: James Brooke\, the White Raja. He had established himself in Sarawak in the early 1840s and was now seeking control over all of Brunei. In his efforts he overthrow the Bendahara in 1844 and even forced the Sultan to flee the region almost two years later. But Brooke was unable to gain control over the neighboring and independent Marudu\, and he perceived Marudu’s growing influence in northwestern Borneo as a serious threat to his powers.\n \nMarudu’s rise started in the early 1830s under Syarif Osman\, the Raja of Marudu. Under him\, Marudu had filled the power vacuum left by diminishing influence of Sulu and Brunei. It bec\nBritain did not want to interfere in the internal affairs of the Southeast Asian states at the time. Only by the charge of piracy James Brooke was able force the British Navy to act against Marudu. As a result\, it is wrongfully described as a pirate’s town in all historic literature until the late 20th century. Based on research done for my dissertation\, I will explain how Brook managed to effectively and permanently defame the Raja of Marudu\, work out Marudu’s true position under the leadership of Syarif Osman\, and correct its place in history.\n\nSpeaker: Dr. Bianca M. Gerlich\n \n\n\n\n \n \n

SUMMARY:TSS KK Talk: The Welfare of Wild Animals in Captivity and their Behavioural Management | 4 July 2019
DESCRIPTION:Join us on the next talk:\n\nTSS Talk: The welfare of wild animals in captivity and their behavioural management.\n\nDate: 4 July 2019\nTime: 8pm\nVenue: The Secretariat\, Sabah Society\nSpeakers: Dave Morgan and Margaret Whittaker\n\nHistorically it has been very difficult to define animal welfare for both wild animals and domestic animals alike. Perceptions of animal welfare are culturally sensitive\, globally variable and subject to change through time and this has consequently led to various indices being used to measure or assess welfare that are not addressing the true nature of animal welfare.\n\nAnimal welfare is a concept that has a diversity of definitions\, and perhaps even more misunderstandings. And it has been stated that there is no consensus on how to measure the welfare status of an animal objectively or the welfare implications of any given management practice.\n\nWith regards to zoos\, and given these challenges\, the difficulties this creates for zoos\, regional zoo associations and regulatory agencies to systematically measure and improve animal welfare across multiple institutions\, habitats and species is clear.\n\nAs a result of the lack of consensus on a definition for animal welfare and how to measure it\, there are many different ways that welfare is interpreted and consequently managed\, resulting in varying standards of care.\n\nAccording to the American Veterinary Medical Association… “Animal welfare means how an animal is coping with the conditions in which it lives.\n\nAn animal is in a good state of welfare if (as indicated by scientific evidence) it is healthy\, comfortable\, well nourished\, safe\, able to express innate behavior\, and if it is not suffering from unpleasant states such as pain\, fear\, and distress. However\, using the most up to date knowledge emerging from welfare research\, it is clear that this should go further than simply avoiding unpleasant states such as pain or fear and actively pursue positive states such as happiness\, joy and contentment.\n\nEvidence is showing that more and more species are being identified as sentient\, i.e have the ability to feel and have a consciousness just like humans\, then simply providing for their basic needs and minimizing negative states is perhaps not enough to really promote positive welfare. These presentations address this need and the methodology for captive wild animal welfare going forward.
