SUMMARY:The Innovation of A Coastal Reservoir in Sabah
DESCRIPTION:Coastal Reservoir is a technology that develops river water in the sea near a river mouth. It is a paradigm shift in water resources development from storing water in mountainous dams to storing freshwater by the coast.\n\nThe mountainous dams in upstream become “sword of Damocles” to downstream people. CR technology can act as barrier to protect coast from earthquake. CR also can be developed into freshwater agriculture farm\, energy and tourism. CR has potential to transform neglected and polluted coastal area into a sustainable freshwater township.\n\nMalaysia is a tropical Southeast Asian country with a steady annual rainfall and river flow pattern. The enormous river networks provide enough supply to build a coastal reservoir\n\nAccording to this research\, embankment design and reservoir operation must account for climate change implications such as rising groundwater level\, changing streamflow discharge during intense and extended droughts\, floods\, and water quality issues.\n\nFor more information\, please do contact us at 013-880 9850 or email sabahsoc@gmail.com\n\nSpeaker bio data – Datuk Ir. DESCRIPTION:Tawfik Tun Dr Ismail talk jointly organised by Sabah Society and SABAR Trustees on August 19\, 2023\, Time: 8.00 pm\, Venue: 8th floor KPJ Hall.\n\nTitle: Inequality in the Borneo states and how to close the gap after 60 years in Malaysia\n\nHistorian Professor Emeritus Datuk Dr Teo Kok Seong\, said the late Tun Dr Ismail was also seen as an icon of unity because he often called and reminded Malaysians regardless of race and religion to get along with each other to create mutual understanding. “The three elements that Tun Dr Ismail emphasised in strengthening unity were inter-ethnic relations\, getting to know each other and understanding each other’s cultures.”\n\nHis fathers’ ideas or philosophy resonates with East Malaysians and Tawfik as the eldest son and co-founder of ‘Malaysia First’ promotes a closer relation between East and West Malaysia. This year the government is celebrating Tun Ismail’s legacy and Sabah Society and SABAR have invited Tawfik to share his views on Inequality in the Borneo states and how to close the gap after 60 years in Malaysia.\n\nMr. Mohamed Tawfik Bin Tun Dr. Ismail bio\n\n“Mr. Mohamed Tawfik Bin Tun Dr. Ismail was formerly a Member of Parliament for Sungai Benut currently Simpang Renggam\, Johor. SUMMARY:The real reason for species extinctions: Human Cognitive Bias and Risk Aversion | Datuk Dr John Payne
DESCRIPTION:I will start with a 45-minute documentary\, filmed from 2013-2015\, and released in 2016\, that outlines the story of the final years of the Hairy rhinoceros (usually known as the Sumatran rhinoceros) from the Sabah perspective. I will then take 15 minutes to outline why this species went extinct over a 5\,000 year time frame\, starting from its former stronghold in southern China\, and now leaving Sumatra as the only place where a few fertile female rhinos of this species remain. The clear message is that human cognitive biases\, risk aversion and other human psychological and emotional syndromes (and not habitat loss or poaching) led to the extinction of this species throughout its range\, and why it will go extinct in the lifetime of younger listeners. I will briefly add a few additional lessons learned\, that can help to prevent the extinction of other Malaysian wildlife species.\n\nTime: 8.00PM\n\nDate: Thursday  |  27 Apr 2023\n\nVenue:  The Sabah Society Secretary\, Damai Plaza\, Luyang.\n\nTel: 013 – 880 9850

SUMMARY:TSS Kk Talk: A Sulu Chiefdom on East Coast Sabah before Chartered Company Rule | Wed\, 4 Dec 2019
DESCRIPTION:This paper discusses the Labuk River as an historical extension of the Sulu State on East Coast Sabah on the eve of Chartered Company rule. The author reconstructs the chiefdom from bottom-up\, supplementing fragmentary archival records with oral traditions and political theory. The author shows how pioneering Company officers began to take an interest in the local politics on the Labuk River in the late 19th century. Even from their outlandish perspective and even in the time of the abject decline of the Sulu Sultanate\, the Labuk River looked nothing like a political vacuum. The paper reaffirms what we have long known: that the Sulu Sultanate was not just a myth but a historical reality on East Coast Sabah.  The paper discusses the dynamics of the Sulu Chiefdom of the Labuk River and how it would have most likely functioned prior to the fall of the Sulu State.\n\nSpeaker profile: Sanen Marshall\, PhD Nottingham is US Fulbright Scholar (2017) and a UK Chevening Scholar (1997) and has published a number of research articles on ethnic groups in Sabah society including those pertaining to some aspects of Kadazandazan history and culture\, and on the issue of the statelessness of the Bajau Laut. \n\nDate: Wed\, 4 Dec 2019\n\nTime: 8.00 pm\n\nVenue: The Secretariat\, Damai Plaza\, Luyang\n\nFor more information\, you may contact us at 088 – 250 443  |  013 – 880 9850  | sabahsoc@gmailcom

SUMMARY:TSS KK Talk: Sunda Pangolins - The Plight of our scaly friends
DESCRIPTION:TSS KK Talk: Sunda Pangolins – The Plight of Our Scaly Friends\nSpeaker: Elisa Panjang from Danau Girang Field Centre\nDate: 22 November 2019\, Friday\nTime: 8:00 pm\nVenue: The Secretariat\, Sabah Society\, Damai Plaza\n\nThe Sunda pangolin is one of eight extant species of pangolin and is native to mainland\, and western island Southeast Asia. The species is listed as Critically Endangered on The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species on the basis of past\, ongoing and future population reductions\, the Sunda pangolin is primarily\, and directly\, threatened by overexploitation for international use. This involves the trafficking of high numbers of live and dead individuals and body parts such as meat and scales. Over the past two decades\, it has been the species of pangolin most frequently seized in illegal trade\, and much of the trafficking by volume is destined for China and Vietnam. The meat is eaten as a luxury dish in high-end urban restaurants in both countries and the scales are used as an ingredient in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Traditional Vietnamese Medicine. Indirect threats include habitat loss and degradation\, which open up previously inaccessible areas to poaching\, and inadequate conservation action. All of these threats are negatively affecting the viability of wild Sunda pangolin populations. The speaker would like to invite particularly government agencies\, learning institutions\, NGOs\, community groups\, donor organizations\, and individuals who want to make a difference for pangolins.\n\nElisa Panjang profile:\nPhD Researcher (Cardiff University)\nPangolin Conservation Officer (Danau Girang Field Centre)\nSunda Pangolin Taskforce (IUCN SSC Pangolin Specialist Group)
