DESCRIPTION:Tawfik Tun Dr Ismail talk jointly organised by Sabah Society and SABAR Trustees on August 19\, 2023\, Time: 8.00 pm\, Venue: 8th floor KPJ Hall.\n\nTitle: Inequality in the Borneo states and how to close the gap after 60 years in Malaysia\n\nHistorian Professor Emeritus Datuk Dr Teo Kok Seong\, said the late Tun Dr Ismail was also seen as an icon of unity because he often called and reminded Malaysians regardless of race and religion to get along with each other to create mutual understanding. “The three elements that Tun Dr Ismail emphasised in strengthening unity were inter-ethnic relations\, getting to know each other and understanding each other’s cultures.”\n\nHis fathers’ ideas or philosophy resonates with East Malaysians and Tawfik as the eldest son and co-founder of ‘Malaysia First’ promotes a closer relation between East and West Malaysia. This year the government is celebrating Tun Ismail’s legacy and Sabah Society and SABAR have invited Tawfik to share his views on Inequality in the Borneo states and how to close the gap after 60 years in Malaysia.\n\nMr. Mohamed Tawfik Bin Tun Dr. Ismail bio\n\n“Mr. Mohamed Tawfik Bin Tun Dr. Ismail was formerly a Member of Parliament for Sungai Benut currently Simpang Renggam\, Johor. He is the eldest son of Tun Dr Ismail Abdul Rahman\, the late 2nd Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia. He was tasked to set up TV3\, Malaysia’s first commercial TV station in 1984. He worked occasionally as consultant for the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies\, Singapore and has contributed articles to its publications.\n\nTawfik is a graduate of the University of New England and the University of Oxford. His books include “Malaysia’s First Year at the United Nations” and “Drifting into Politics: The Unfinished Memoirs of Tun Dr Ismail Abdul Rahman ” (both with Ooi Kee Beng). He is a co-founder of Malaysia First and Gerak Independent. In 2022\, Tawfik contested the Bagan Datuk parliamentary seat himself as an independent challenging Zahid Hamidi\, President of UMNO and others to create new political dynamics away from race and religion.”
