SUMMARY:TSS KK Talk - Tues\, 11 Aug 2020 | The 1963 Malaysia Agreement: Pakatan's failed restoration & Perikatan's fledging initiatives
DESCRIPTION:Over the past decades\, people of the Borneo States (Sabah and Sarawak) have felt that their rights under MA63 have been violated\, and a sense of distrust toward the federal-state relationship in a Peninsula-dominated Malaysia. The call for the federal government to fulfill its MA63 obligations surfaces during every election\, but in recent years MA63 has increasingly resonated in the political arena. The 14th general elections\, May 2018\, saw Sabah and Sarawak secure campaign promises for increased political autonomy over religious matters\, education\, health\, and fiscal control over their development agendas. Expectations of progress ran high\, given the unprecedented change of federal government. The frustrations run deep; some East Malaysians have called for Sabah and Sarawak to secede from Malaysia if their demands are not met. These issues resonate again\, in the aftermath of Pakatan Harapan’s collapse.\n\nThis talk discusses the MA63 issues\, the unfulfilled promises by the signatories of MA63\, and federal state relationship with regards to revenue. Dr Johan unpack the attempts by the Pakatan government to resolve the major issues concerning MA63 and Perikatan government fledging initiatives to follow on Pakatan’s unfulfilled promises.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr Johan Ariffin was formerly the CEO of Institute for Development Studies\, a Sabah government think tank. He holds a Doctorate in Business Administration from the University of South Australia and an MBA from the University of Hull. He has worked with several multinational corporations\, including ExxonMobil\, and held board positions of several leading companies including Shell Timor and Petronas subsidiary companies. Dr Johan has also served as Deputy Director of the Sabah State Foundation in charge of education development\, while concurrently spearheading oil and gas development for the state. He is a member of G25\, and a regular columnist contributing opinion articles to online news portals and the Daily Express\, Kota Kinabalu.\n\nKindly please take note that we are still under RMCO. Therefore all SOP’s set by the Government will be in place ie recording of temperature\, use of face mask and social distancing of 1M apart.\n\nAs such\, we are opening the Secretariat for only max 15 paxs – kindly please register at email: sabahsoc@gmail.com or whatsapp: 013 – 880 9850\n\nFor those who would like to view online\, we shall provide the zoom link at a later date.\n\n

SUMMARY:Joint event by The Sabah Society KK & Sandakan and Forever Sabah Institute | Thur\, 30 July 2020
DESCRIPTION:Ada Blanche Locke spent 16 years in North Borneo as consort of Victorian explorer and naturalist\, William Burgess Pryer\, the founder of Sandakan\, and first white resident of the East Coast. Her vivid and eloquent recollection of daily life in the formative years of British North Borneo are brought to life in this highly-awaited biographical volume by author and aspiring artist\, June Adeline Corpuz. Accentuated with June’s scenic etchings of late-19th century Sandakan and watercolour sketches by William Pretyman\, the West Coast Resident in the late 19th century\, the book captures Mrs Pryer’s momentous years at its most evocative.\n\nJune Adeline Corpuz is the granddaughter of Penghalo Stanilaus Dominic\, an orphan from a royal house of sea-faring tribe\, who was brought up by the Pryers. June migrated to England initially to complete her education\, but ultimately\, as a banking professional for forty years. On retirement\, curiosity about her childhood stories compelled June to research passionately into the heritage of the Pryers that eventually formed the basis for this book and the biography of Mrs Pryer. \n\nPlease email to sabahsoc@gmail.com with your information – Full name\, email\, Country\, City\, Organisation and Job Title and we will provide you the zoom link.\n\nFor our members here in Kota Kinabalu\, Sabah – we are specially opening The Secretariat for only max 20 paxs to join in via Group Zoom. Please do email us to reserve your seat. For others\, you may join in via Zoom online wherever you are.
