TSS KK Field trip: Tuaran town, 16 Nov 2014

Tuaran trip

School holidays are coming soon… why not bring your family and children to visit Tuaran town.

Tuaran is a town as well as a district located in West Coast Division, in the northwest of Sabah, East Malaysia on the island of Borneo. The town has the great advantage for being a stopover town for travellers from the north towns (Kudat, Kota Marudu, Kota Belud, and Tenghilan) to the state capital, Kota Kinabalu which is 34km to the south of Tuaran. Every Sunday morning, Tuaran town holds a big natives’ open market known as Tamu by the Sabahans. Harvests of produce from nearby villages and valleys are brought to the market, such as fruits, vegetables, handicrafts, fish, homemade traditional cakes, traditional homegrown tobacco, and so on. The tamu supplies many great photo opportunities for tourists. The Tuaran tamu is second only to the one in Kota Belud in terms of size and exotica.

Tentative itinerary:

7.30 am  Gather at The Sabah Society Secretariat, Damai. Depart for Tuaran. Have your early breakfast at the shops around Damai or bring your own snacks and eat along the way. Its about 1 hour’s drive.

8.30 am  Arrive at the entrance to Intitut Pendidikan Guru Kampus Kent (Kent teachers’ training college). We will go on a guided tour at the college by senior lecturer, Dr Lisa Yip.

9.30 am  Depart for Tuaran main town. Dr Lisa will bring us on a heritage trail walk of Tuaran town. A must place to go is the Tuaran tamu (open market). Bring your camera and you might get an impressive snap short photo! And for those with gastronomy likings, there are variety of food to eat ie Tuaran mee, rojak, beef noodle etc.

11.00 am Depart for Dr.Heng’s residence (for those who do not know Dr Heng, come and meet this multifaceted man! – he will engage you with his many stories on his adventures locally and internationally). We will have pot luck BBQ lunch, so please bring along your favorite dish or you can buy some local delicacies at the Tuaran tamu. And for those that would like to cool down, Dr Heng’s residence is by the beach, so go ahead relax or take a swim !

1.00 pm  Depart back to KK.

Cost per participant is RM20.00 only.

Remember, the date to book is on the Sunday, 16th Nov 2014. For further information, please contact The Secretariat on 088-250 443 or email at sabahsoc@gmail.com
