Mr Ross Ibbotson will present a talk on Trade and Strife around Borneo. – The Austronesian’s, particularly the Indonesian/Malay/ Philippine group (referred to loosely as “Malays” are probably the earliest seafarers in world history. This paper, illustrated with over 60 photographs and maps, deals with the earliest evidence of ocean travel, the subsequent voyages of reconstructed replicas and the role that the “Malays” played in Asian trade for some 2000 years and follows on to cover the arrival of the first Europeans in the 16th Century, the Spice Wars, pirates and slavers, and ending with the cession of North Borneo to the Chartered Company in 1878.
