Wong Shau Yee
Now a resident of Sydney, Australia, Mr Wong returns to Sabah from time to time and was happy to repeat his talk to Sandakan members (in April 2007) for those of us in Kota Kinabalu.
We were treated to a most interesting presentation on the history of stamps in Sabah, with slides to show the development of designs over the years. The artwork for some of the stamps was exquisite – the original paintings must be worth seeing!
New issues of stamps were as follows:
- 1883 North Borneo (N.B.) first high value stamps
- 1886 British NB stamps • 1922 Malaya Borneo Exhibition stamps
- 1889 $5 & $10 stamps • 1941 NB War Tax stamps
- 1889 NB revenue stamp • 1944 NB – Imperial Japanese stamps
- 1894 State of NB stamps • 1945 NB British Administration stamps
- Other stamps that were issued until 1963
This talk stimulated a great deal of interest amongst those present, with questions and answers throughout, AND a quiz at the end to find out if we had been paying attention!
