Indigenous Ethnic Communities of Sabah: The Kadazandusun
It is with great pleasure that The Sabah Society welcomes Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Herman Luping to talk on four key aspects of the Kadazandusun Ethnic Community.
- An outline of the various indigenous ethnic communities of Sabah with particular emphasis on the Kadazandusun; the origin of the Kadazandusun; and the origin of the terms Kadazan and Dusun and the eventual use of the term Kadazandusun.
- The importance of adat (traditional laws) to the Kadazandusun community. The types of fines known as sogit and babas are presented, as are the origin and role of the native court. The role of the ‘common law’ is also discussed with a view to considering whether adat is an anomaly today.
- The position of the Kadazandusun as farmers or subsistence cultivators. The kampung people are mostly self-sufficient, yet many are living below the poverty line. Rice is their staple diet and plays an important role in shaping their life as farmers. Their belief in Bambazon (the rice spirit) has a strong influence on their upbringing and how they view themselves as farmers.
- The place of the Kadazandusun in present-day Sabah. There have been suggestions that many indigenous ethnic communities, especially amongst the Kadazandusun, have been marginalised and that past neglect of these people by successive Sabah governments is the reason for this problem.
