Lilian Gibbs was the first woman to climb Mount Kinabalu completing her ascent on February 24th, 1910. Lilian Gibbs arrived in British North Borneo at the end of December, 1909. She was advised by the Governor, Mr. H.P. Guerlitz, to defer her ascent of Mt. Kinabalu until somewhat later, because the rainy season was still in Members of The Sabah society together with three members of the 1964 Royal Society Expedition to the Eastern plateau of Mount Kinabalu who revisited the Mesilau Cave, near the site of the base camp of that expedition, 23 October 2004. The brave Sabah Society members who braved the cold and pouring rain to ascend the very much less-known eastern plateau of Mount Kinabalu along a route only opened to non-professional climbers after the installation of aluminum ladders by the 1989 Raleigh International project, 6-8 September 2004 Dr Ravi Mandalam thanking Mr Michael Ickes for his screening of a 30-minute video, “Exploring the Old Trails from Kiau up Mt Kinabalu”.
