Surprise Visitor to the Society

On Monday 30th March former treasurer Daniel Soo brought along two ladies to the talk on Postage Stamps. Dr Pam Tatham, whose late husband was Mr John MacCartney, a founder member of The Sabah Society and its third President, was paying her first visit to Sabah since 1988, with her companion Dr Anne Wynne-Simmons. Mr MacCartney worked with the Chartered Company, became involved in local government, was chairman of the public services commission, became Commissioner of Immigration and Labour. He was the secretary of the Turf Club, which became the Royal North Borneo Turf Club, one of the very few in the world. Before he passed away in 1994, he left money for a native sabahan student to study at his old college, St Peter’s, Oxford, and requested that his remains be brought back to All Saints Cathedral.
