Farewell Party for Puan Zahra Yaacob

On Saturday 22 May, a Farewell Party was held in honour of Puan Zahra Yaacob, the Immediate Past President of The Sabah Society who is leaving Sabah—a State which she called home for the last three decades—for good. The event was generously hosted by Datuk CL Chan, the newly elected President, at his residence in Kolombong, Kota Kinabalu. The party was attended by more than 50 invited guests, including former Presidents Dr Tay Eong Beok and Ms Patricia Regis and former Treasurers Chio Cheng Leng and Daniel Soo. Also present was Zahra’s former Boss at the Borneo Research Centre, Dr Pang Teck Wai and one of the two Society’s Honarary Life Members, Ms Tina Rimmer.

After animated discussions during the delicious dinner, Datuk CL Chan honoured Puan Zahra Yaacob for her relentless and long-lasting contributions and commitment to The Sabah Society. The auspicious occasion also coincided with Zahra’s birthday. She was presented with a historic photograph of Old Jesselton, now Kota Kinabalu, and a new book entitled ‘Tawau: The Making of a Tropical Community’. Puan Zahra Yaacob in her witty speech, thanked all the members of The Sabah Society she worked with for their contributions. We are also thankful for the lovely weather—no rain at all throughout the evening even though it had been threatening the whole afternoon. The Farewell Party for Puan Zahra Yaacob was a great success and an enjoyable evening for all. We wish her all the very best in her ‘New Life’ upon her return to Kuala Lumpur and we look forward to see her intermittently during her future visits to Sabah.
