Mr. Joseph Lee will present a talk on “The Individual and the Environment” to the Sabah Society on Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at 7:30pm at The Secretariat
Mr. Lee is a Sabahan and a graduate of Lancaster University, UK. Mr. Lee will talk about recycling and the contribution each individual can make to cleaning up our environment. He will also give information on the good done with the funds raised through recycling and talk about what he is doing and planning with his plastic recovery plant.
He has been involved in voluntary work for the last 12 to 13 years through the Charity Organization, Tzu Chi. In this capacity, Mr. Lee has been involved in a number of disaster relief operations including the Tsunami in Sri Lanka.
Also through Tzu Chi, Joseph has been involved in recycling in Kota Kinabalu for the last 8 years. Two years ago, he decided to try to do something about the plastic waste in our environment. All recyclable plastic in Sabah was being shipped to East Malaysia but many items were not worth shipping so remained to create problems in our environment. After conducting a lot of research and facing some setbacks, Joseph set up a plastic recovery plant in Kota Kinabalu. His goal is to turn all forms of plastic waste into a usable commodity. This will give plastic waste a value and encourage people to recycle instead of discarding it.
