Do you fancy a delicious cup of Malaysia’s finest coffee? How about a day spent strolling amongst every variety of beautiful plant imaginable? Then please join us for an overnight trip to Tenom!
The town of Tenom, which is scenically situated under the protective arms of the Crocker Range, is known for its abundance and variety of agricultural products. Coffee has been in production in the valley since it was established in the 19th century by the British Chartered North Borneo Company. Mr. Foong Choon Sang has been growing coffee for more than 20 years and is known as the “Coffee King” of Tenom. In 1999, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed, Malaysia’s former Prime Minister launched Tenom Fatt Choi Coffee, and in 2004 the factory and plantation grounds were opened to the public for educational visits. The comfortable teak-wood chalet cabins have only been available for stay since 2007.
Located near the rural town is Tenom Agricultural Park, Sabah’s showcase gardens where you may stroll along paths winding through 1,500 acres of land, displaying thousands of varieties of lush tropical plants, including their evolution from dinosaur days. Its orchid centre alone displays over 1000 species of indigenous orchids and hybrids, all lovingly placed by our very own Sabah Society member Tony Lamb, who was instrumental in the development of the Agricultural Park. It’s a destination you will want to visit many times, and if you haven’t yet been to Tenom Agricultural Park, you really must—it’s truly a wonderful experience.
Also known as the “gateway to Murut country”, our meeting place in Tenom will be beside the statue of Ontoros Antenom (1885-1915), a local Murut who led a revolt against the British colonists in the Tenom area in 1915. He was a charismatic leader who died fighting for his people’s rights, sadly not standing a chance against the superior modern weapons of the British. Local Muruts today regard him as a legendary hero.
