The Society’s Annual General Meeting was held at the Secretariat last night, the 20th April with 26 members in attendance.
After approving the minutes of the previous AGM, the outgoing President, Zahrah Yaacob delivered her report on the activities of the society over the previous year, see attached.

A meeting will be held soon after the AGM to discuss arrangements and plan the activities so that the final cost can be known. (To give an idea of cost, it is hoped that it will be less than RM1,000. Dr Hotlin Ompusunggu and Ms Elizabeth Bast, who are briefly visiting Kota Kinabalu, will present a talk about the work of Project ASRI in West Kalimantan on Thursday 15th April, at the Secretariat, 7.30pm. This project partners with local communities to integrate high quality, affordable health care with strategies to protect the rainforest.

Mr Ross Ibbotson will present a talk on Trade and Strife around Borneo. – The Austronesian’s, particularly the Indonesian/Malay/ Philippine group (referred to loosely as “Malays” are probably the earliest seafarers in world history. This paper, illustrated with over 60 photographs and maps, deals with the earliest evidence of ocean travel, the subsequent voyages of reconstructed replicas and the role that the “Malays” played in Asian trade for some 2000 years and follows on to cover the arrival of the first Europeans in the 16th Century, the Spice Wars, pirates and slavers, and ending with the cession of North Borneo to the Chartered Company in 1878.
