Lilian Gibbs was the first woman to climb Mount Kinabalu completing her ascent on February 24th, 1910.
Lilian Gibbs arrived in British North Borneo at the end of December, 1909. She was advised by the Governor, Mr. H.P. Guerlitz, to defer her ascent of Mt. Kinabalu until somewhat later, because the rainy season was still in progress, and because the Dusuns who would serve as her porters were busy with their padi harvest. Consequently she took the train from Jesselton (Kota Kinabalu) to Tenom where she began her collecting programme. Congratulations to Professor Danny Wong, who has given several very interesting talks to the Society on his visits back to KK. He was promoted to full professor in the History Department at the University of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur.

Dr Andrew was born in March 1933 in Grenada, West Indies, where his father was Archdeacon of the Windward Islands. On his return to UK, he was educated at the Canterbury Cathedral Choir School, and Marlborough College. During his two years of National Service, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Northamptonshire Regiment and seconded to Ghana with the 1st Battalion of the Gold Coast Regiment.
