IMG_1952Dr Geoffrey Muldoon gave us an inspiring and very thought provoking presentation on the state of fish populations in the Coral Triangle. This is an area of 2.3 million square miles of ocean in the Indo-Pacific (see the WWF Map) around Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, the Solomon Islands, and Timor-Leste. The Coral Triangle consists of a myriad of life forms, and is the marine life equivalent in eco-diversity to the Amazon Basin for land based species, according to the World Wildlife Fund. Review : The Lives of Martin and Osa Johnson

L1025699 copyThe significance of  North Borneo, hence Sabah, to the pioneering wildlife documentary makers Osa & Martin Johnson was brought to life by Ms Jacquelyn Borgeson, curator of the Osa & Martin Johnson Safari Museum in Chanute, Kansas, USA. The Society hosted Jacquelyn for the 2nd time in 5 years, and were treated to slideshow of over 90 photographs, covering the 1920 and 1935 Kinabatangan expeditions of the Johnsons. Live Reef Fish Trade in SE Asia and Sabah: What Nationality is your Fish?

The Sabah Society welcomes Dr. Geoffrey Muldoon, to talk on the subject of “What Nationality is your Fish.
Dr Muldoon began working with WWF in 2006, examining the live reef fish trade (LRFT) in the Sulu-Sulawesi Marine Ecoregion before being appointed strategy leader for the LRFT sub-initiative of the Coral Triangle programme.

In this capacity, Geoffrey coordinates the various LRFT activities across the Coral Triangle (industry roundtables, full-cycle mariculture, consumer education, partnership development between government and private sector and understanding and redressing ecosystem impacts). The Sabah Society is pleased to welcome Ms. Jacquelyn Borgeson,  who will present a talk and photo presentation covering both the 1920 and 1935 photo expeditions conducted by explorers Martin and Osa Johnson up the Kinabatangan.  She will also discuss ongoing and proposed projects by the Safari Museum to make the photos and films available to all peoples of Sabah.

Committee moves to promote Membership

2008 Sabah Society JournalAt the recent committee meeting of the Sabah Society, the question arose of what benefits are obtained by a person becoming a member of the society. One of the benefits identified was that of receiving the annual Journal of the Society. However it was also pointed out that while this was a valuable benefit, there was a problem, as the Journal was also obtainable by non-members for a fee of RM 25, representing 50% of the cost of the annual membership fee. This had the effect of diluting the value of membership.

Review : Sabah, the Gourmet Chocolate Capital of the World

This talk by Douglas Furtek on Tuesday 14th July gave an insight into the potential of the chocolate industry of Sabah. The speaker informed the audience, that Sabah has been the main producer of Malaysian cocoa (the state had been the leading cocoa producer even before it joined Malaysia.) He then went on to highlight the different quality of chocolates (and cocoa drinks) produced by Malaysia, comparing the present Malaysian-made chocolates to those produced by the European countries,  Australia, New Zealand as well as Japan.
