TSS KK Talk: Thur, 16 Aug 2018 – 40 years of conservation in Sabah

Date: Thursday, 16th Aug 2018

Time: 8.00 pm

Venue: The Sabah Society Secretariat, Damai Plaza, Luyang

Professor Glyn Davies will give a talk on 40 yeas of conservation in Sabah. From 1979-1982, Glyn Davies and John Payne carried out the Faunal Survey of Sabah, for Sabah Forestry Department and WWF Malaysia. It was the first State-wide assessment of wildlife in Sabah, and provided a baseline and recommendations for forest and wildlife conservation, with a particular emphasis on large mammal species which were threatened by logging and forest loss at the time. The talk will therefore trace the changes in forest land use in Sabah, from that period until today, using orangutan, Sumatran rhinoceros and Borneo pygmy elephant as examples of conservation outcomes.

Glyn Davies began his career working for WWF Malaysia, and has recently returned to Sabah as a Senior Adviser with WWF Malaysia. In between he has worked on field conservation and research for forest and wildlife conservation in Africa: Sierra Leone, Kenya, Cameroun, and Asia: India, as well as working on conservation and sustainable development policy for the UK Government and European Commission. Prior to returning to Sabah he was Conservation Director of the Zoological Society of London, and then Conservation Director of WWF-UK, and he served as Chair of the Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology (DICE) Advisory Board.
