SYMPOSIUM ON SWIFTLET FARMING, 17 Mar 2016 (Thurs) @ 9.00am – 1.30pm

SwiftletSYMPOSIUM ON SWIFTLET FARMING: TAXONOMIC STATUS, GENETICS, BEHAVIOUR AND CURRENT MANAGEMENT.

The objectives of this symposium are:

  • To disseminate information, development and current practices in swiftlet farming;
  • To identify and share issues in bird farming industry in Malaysia;
  • To impart knowledge on the importance of genetic studies among swiftlet farmers.

Understanding the genetics of these swiftlets is important to swiftlets farmers. It may become possible to identify and propagate genotypes that show advantageous characters. For instance, those that are particularly productive, or produce nests of exceptional size or quality, or display strong fidelity to their home site. On top of that, disease inevitably threatening any birds kept in large numbers in close quarters, lineages offering genetic resistance may be identifiable. With enhanced understanding of the genome, it may even prove feasible to engineer deliberate crosses and thereby introduce other desirable characters.
