Eight Sabah Society members participated in the outing to Kapalai. It was raining cats and dogs the few days before the trip. But the heavens broke up in time to provide us fine weather as we made our way to Kapalai. Madam Goh provided us with a comfortable four and a half hour overland ride to the little coastal town of Semporna. New Art Exhibition at The Sabah Society Secretariat
The opening of the new Art Exhibition at The Sabah Society Secretariat, featuring the latest work of Dianne Gee, will be opened on Wednesday 10th March.
The Society continues to be grateful to the Hyatt International Hotel for its sponsorship of the Art Exhibitions, and the artists are very appreciative of the exposure they receive when their work is hung afterwards in the foyer of the Hyatt Hotel.
This opening will coincide with the Talk by Datuk Mike Steel on the Orang Utan Projects. We look forward to seeing you there.
Congratulations – They Made it – Update 3
The Ladies of the Sabah Society successfully reached the summit of Mount Kinabalu at 14:20 on the 24th February, 2010, exactly one century after Lilian Gibbs became the first woman to climb this imposing mountain. In the Footsteps of Lilian Gibbs – Update 2
The Sabah Society wishes the team of lady members all the best in their quest to re-enact the ascent of Mt Kinabalu by Lilian Gibbs, the first women to ascend Mt Kinabalu. The team departed Kampong Kiau this morning on the first of 3 days to the summit.
They were seen off by a large group of supporters who stayed the night in Kampong Kiau, and witnessed the blessing of the climb, before wishing the 5 climbers, 1 guide and three porters all the best in their efforts. The team are scheduled to reach the summit on the 24th February, the centenary anniversary of the climb.
In the Footsteps of Lilian Gibbs – Update
For those members of the Sabah Society who would like to witness the century old ritual ceremony, and at the same time “flag” off the ladies on their climb of Mt Kinabalu. A package has been arranged for Sabah Society members, which is inclusive of dinner, a light supper (maybe boiled ubi kayu), bed and breakfast at the Kiau Homestead. An Exhibition at the Dewan Bandaraya KK.
Tomorrow (8th Feb) is the last day to catch this display. The Dewan is the Quonset Hut building (tunnel-like roof) at the top end of Australia Place, on a diagonal with Jesselton Hotel.
North Borneo Sacred Legacy Photographic Exhibition
The aforementioned exhibition includes incredible black and white photographs shot by George Woolley, who worked for the British Administration in the very early 1900s. Images you probably haven’t seen before, and certainly won’t forget. Well worth a visit, and further details can be found here

Ladies and Gentlemen, as many of you are aware your fees for the Sabah Society are due now.
Just a reminder the memberships fees (RM 50) are personal, (ie for one person). As we are planning some major events this year, our 50th Anniversary, to which members will obtain significant discounts, you are encouraged to settle your dues prior to the 1st March, 2010.
